Wale Olarinde's Medico-Legal Practice

Mr. Wale Olarinde qualified in 1991 and has been in active clinical practice since then. He trained in accident and emergency medicine, orthopaedics, general surgery and a higher surgical training in ear nose and throat/head and neck surgery. Mr. Olarinde was appointed locum consultant head and neck cancer surgeon at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham in June 2010 and appointed to a substantive consultant post (in ear nose and throat surgery with a special interest in head and neck surgery) at the Chesterfield Royal Hospital in December 2010. He is honorary consultant to the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield where he carries out cancer surgical work and the Sheffield Children’s Hospital where he participates in emergency surgical work. He has regular annual appraisals to evaluate his practice of ear nose & throat surgery which is essentially evidence based.

Half of his practice is a general otolaryngology service managing patients with all forms of hearing loss, tinnitus, vertigo and nasal/sinus complaints. The other half of his practice involves providing a specialist service in diagnosing and managing conditions in the head and neck region – cancer and benign conditions. He is a core member of the North Trent Head and Neck Cancer multidisciplinary team and, therefore, involved in the management decisions of all patients with head and neck cancers in the network (population 1.8 million). About 300 new cases of head and neck cancer per annum are managed in the network. He regularly carries out major surgery on head and neck cancer patients and supervises their daily post-operative care. He is also a core member of the North Trent Thyroid multidisciplinary team as surgical management of patients with thyroid and parathyroid disease is part of his head and neck practice. His practice also involves management of patients with blunt and sharp trauma to parts of the body above the collar bone, excluding brain injuries.

He has authored medico-legal reports on occupational hearing loss and personal injury with tinnitus and vertigo. He has also authored medicolegal reports on medical negligence involving the management of head and neck disease (cancer and benign disease) and general ear nose and throat conditions. He has provided police reports in cases of facial/nasal injuries, sharp neck injuries and injuries to the ear and organ of balance. He has also provided disability reports for patients with head and neck cancers. He has given expert witness and advice since 2012 and authors an average of 35-40 reports a year. This excludes joint reports. He has given evidence in court at the Queen’s Bench in 2018.

He has been formally trained as an Expert Witness and has achieved the Certificate of Expert Witness Accreditation (Cardiff University / Bond Solon). This certification involved training in report writing, giving evidence in court, the relevant law theory (civil law and procedure) and he was successfully examined in these matters. He is on various registers for expert witnesses included vetted registers e.g. UK register of Expert Witnesses and the vetted register maintained by the Expert Witness Institute. He is a 1st tier APIL (association of personal injury lawyers) expert i.e. been recommended by an APIL member.
