Dr Rabie offers a range of modern treatment options for Back and Joints (knee, shoulder) conditions:

Local anaesthetics and steroid injections

When conservative treatments such as weight management, exercise and pain medications have failed to have an impact, local anaesthetics and steroid injections can be used to reduce inflammation and temporarily improve pain and function. Injected onto the affected area on the spine, or into or around an affected joint, they can be repeated up to 2-3 times per year.

Injectable treatments offered by Dr Rabie include image-guided facet joint injections, epidural injections for chronic back pain and sciatica, and injections for painful knee and shoulder joints.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA)

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive pain management procedure used to treat chronic spinal and joint pain. It is particularly effective for arthritis-related joint pain affecting the spine, knees and sacroiliac joints.

Patients suitable for treatment with RFA have typically experienced chronic pain for more than six months and have not found relief using conservative methods. Patient selection is a key factor determining the success of the procedure and Dr Rabie will be happy to advise on suitability in each individual case.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) is a concentrate of platelets derived from the patient’s own blood. The platelets contain growth factors that have the potential to promote healing and tissue repair.

PRP injections have been in use for the last 20 years to treat non-specific low back pain and mild to moderate osteoarthritis. Clinical studies have shown that patients who receive a course of PRP treatments can experience significant improvement in pain and other symptoms, making it an attractive option for those seeking an alternative to surgery or corticosteroid injections.

Viscosupplementation is a treatment for osteoarthritis that involves injecting a gel-like substance called hyaluronic acid (HA) into a joint, most commonly the knee. HA is a naturally occurring substance found in the synovial fluid which lubricates and cushions the ends of the bones and keeps them moving smoothly. In joints affected by osteoarthritis, the amount and quality of the synovial fluid can be compromised, resulting in stiffness and pain.

Viscosupplementation as a treatment for osteoarthritis is still being studied. The focus up to now has been predominantly on the knee and there is some evidence for temporary improvement in pain symptoms and function for up to a few months in mild to moderate osteoarthritis. Unlike steroid injections, the technique is not associated with any long-term side effects.
