Ovarian Cancer debulking surgery

Summary

Ovarian Cancer debulking surgery

The purpose of ovarian cancer surgery is in fact two-fold. Firstly, it serves to 'stage' the cancer, i.e. ascertain how far it has spread from the ovary. This is followed by 'debulking' surgery to remove as much of the cancerous tissue as possible. This usually includes the uterus, both ovaries, fallopian tubes, and sometimes the omentum as well (fatty tissue layer covering the abdominal contents). If fluid is present in the abdominal cavity, then this too will be removed. The main purpose of the debulking surgery is not to leave any tumour larger than 1 cm behind. It is very important that the staging and the debulking surgery is performed by a specialist gynecologist or gynecologic oncologist.
