Echinococcosis is also known as 'hydatid disease', it is due to an infection by the larvae of the Echinococcus granulosis tapeworm which is found in dogs. This tapeworm is ingested by the dog by eating infected raw meat. Humans are infected with the tapeworm as pet owners allow their pet dogs to lick their faeces. Water contaminated by infested dog faeces could also be a mode of transfer. There are no drugs to treat this condition, only surgical removal of the cysts plus chemotherapy is recommended.
