Conditions and treatments

Freedom Vision Belfast offers cataract surgery with a range of lens choices.

Cataract surgery

As we age, the clear lens inside our eye can become opaque causing blurry and misty vision. This is called a cataract. Cataract surgery is the procedure to remove the opaque lens and replace it with a replacement lens (intraocular lens or IOL). Undergoing surgery at an earlier stage in the development of the cataract is associated with a quicker recovery and a technically easier procedure.

Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed surgery in the UK, with around half a million procedures completed every year. It is conducted while the patient is awake using local anaesthetic eye drops, is painless, and takes around 15 minutes to complete.

Freedom Vision Belfast offers every patient a free one-hour consultation with an optometrist, where a series of non-invasive eye tests will be carried out to determine your suitability for surgery. If surgery is the right option for you, you will then benefit from another free consultation with a consultant ophthalmologist (eye surgeon), who will be able to discuss the lens options available to you and answer any questions you have before your operation.

Intraocular lens (IOL)

As a private clinic, Freedom Vision Belfast can offer a variety of top-of-the-range IOLs. The consultants at Freedom Vision are skilled in finding the right solution for each person based on their vision, eye health and lifestyle/hobbies.

The types of IOL available are:

  • Standard monofocal IOLs: these provide high quality distance vision, however glasses may still be needed for intermediate or near vision. These lenses are the cheapest lens option and are used during NHS cataract surgery. In cases where they are most appropriate, patients will be informed so that they can decide whether they would still like to pay for private treatment.
  • Enhanced monofocal IOLs: these provide excellent distance and intermediate vision. Around a third of patients also find that they don’t need glasses for close-up tasks, but there is no guarantee of being completely glasses-free after surgery. These lenses are also designed to reduce glare, halo or starbursts.
  • Monofocal Toric IOLs: these lenses are designed to correct astigmatism in affected patients and to provide clearer vision. They will provide high quality distance vision, but patients will still need glasses for near and intermediate vision.
  • Monovision: suitable for patients who require cataract surgery in both eyes, this is a popular surgical technique that can expand a person’s range of vision. It generally results in excellent distance and near vision, although glasses may still be required for fine print.
  • Multifocal/Trifocal IOLs: these advanced lenses are designed to provide high quality near, intermediate and distance vision, making them a good option for those seeking to become less dependent on glasses, or in many cases, glasses-free. However, although they look attractive on paper, trifocal lenses are not suitable for everyone and the consultants at Freedom Vision can advise on suitability in each individual case. It should also be noted that vision may naturally start to deteriorate again following implantation of a trifocal lens, so there is no guarantee of being glasses-free in the long-term.
