James Hopkins: Consultant General Surgeon in Bristol
Mr James Hopkins is a specialist upper gastrointestinal (UGI) and bariatric surgeon with a focus on laparoscopic (keyhole) abdominal procedures. His areas of expertise include the treatment of gallstone disease, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) and all types of hernias. He has a particular interest in complex abdominal wall reconstruction for challenging or recurrent hernias.
Mr Hopkins is also a fully accredited metabolic (weight-loss) surgeon and bariatric endoscopist, having undertaken advanced sub-specialist and fellowship training in this field.
Actively involved in clinical outcomes research, Mr Hopkins was the lead in the development of a core-outcome set for bariatric surgery (the BARIACT project) as part of the ByBandSleeve randomised controlled trial (RCT). He currently serves as the Principal Investigator at North Bristol NHS Trust for the ByBandSleeve multicentre RCT, as well as the Sunflower & Rosier multicentre gallstone RCTs. He is a former member of the National Bariatric Surgery Registry (NBSR), responsible for its third report, and acted as an advisor for the 2012 NCEPOD enquiry into bariatric surgery.
Mr Hopkins is a member of the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons (AUGIS), the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ALSGBI) and the British Obesity and Metabolic Surgery Society (BOMSS), where he recently concluded his term on the council.
