Dr John Silberbauer: Consultant Cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist in Brighton
Dr John Silberbauer is a Consultant Cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist in Brighton with expertise in diagnosing and treating heart rhythm disorders, specialising in complex catheter ablation procedures, advanced cardiac electrophysiology and cardiovascular investigations.
Education & experience
Dr John Silberbauer is an experienced Consultant Cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist with a distinguished career in the diagnosis and treatment of complex heart rhythm disorders. They began their academic journey at the University of Cambridge, where they completed a Master of Arts before studying medicine at University College London, graduating with an MBBS in 2000. They later completed an MD (Res) higher postgraduate research degree at City, St George's, University of London.
Following their medical training, they undertook specialist fellowships at both St Thomas' Hospital and King's College Hospital, gaining extensive experience in cardiac electrophysiology. They also completed a prestigious European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) fellowship under the guidance of Dr Paolo Della Bella at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan, further developing expertise in advanced catheter ablation techniques.
Since 2015, Dr Silberbauer has been a Consultant Cardiologist and Cardiac Electrophysiologist at the Sussex Cardiac Centre in Brighton, where they manage patients with a wide range of cardiac rhythm conditions. Alongside their clinical practice, they have served as Chief Medical Officer for ChamberTech since 2025, contributing to innovation within cardiovascular medicine.
Internationally recognised for advancing the field of cardiac electrophysiology, Dr Silberbauer pioneered the EpiCO2 technique for epicardial access during complex ventricular tachycardia ablation procedures. They also have a longstanding commitment to teaching and academic development, supervising PhD and MD (Res) students while collaborating with Brighton and Sussex Medical School and the University of Sussex.

Research interests
Dr Silberbauer's research is centred on improving catheter ablation techniques for complex and potentially life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias. Their work combines randomised controlled trials with mechanistic research to better understand procedural safety, long-term treatment effectiveness and the use of emerging technologies within cardiac electrophysiology.
They are internationally recognised for developing the EpiCO2 technique, an innovative method that enables safer epicardial access for mapping and treating ventricular tachycardia and persistent atrial fibrillation. Their research also investigates pulsed field ablation, dual-energy systems and controlled lesion stacking to enhance procedural outcomes.
Working closely with Brighton and Sussex Medical School and the University of Sussex, Dr Silberbauer actively contributes to academic research while supervising postgraduate researchers exploring new approaches to complex ablation procedures.
Clinical interests
Dr Silberbauer has a particular clinical interest in the diagnosis and treatment of complex ventricular and atrial arrhythmias. They specialise in advanced catheter ablation procedures for ventricular tachycardia, persistent atrial fibrillation and other challenging heart rhythm disorders.
They are committed to continually refining electrophysiology techniques to improve patient safety and treatment outcomes. Their practice incorporates innovative technologies and evidence-based approaches, ensuring patients benefit from modern developments in cardiac rhythm management.
Accolades & awards
Dr Silberbauer is internationally recognised for pioneering the EpiCO2 technique for epicardial access during complex ventricular tachycardia ablation. This innovative technique has had a worldwide impact by improving the safety and effectiveness of procedures requiring access to the outer surface of the heart.
They have also been awarded a prestigious European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) fellowship, reflecting their expertise and contribution to the field of cardiac electrophysiology.
