Professor Hashim Ahmed named prostate cancer specialist of the year

Based at Bupa Cromwell Hospital, Ahmed has spearheaded a cancer pathway, bringing quick and connected treatment for men with prostate cancer

Professor Hashim Ahmed, Consultant Urological Surgeon at the Bupa Cromwell Hospital, has been named the UK's Prostate Cancer Specialist of the Year in the prestigious Private Healthcare awards 2018.

Ahmed has also been instrumental in rolling out Bupa's prostate care pathway, a new diagnosis journey which quickly takes patients from their initial prostate check right through to their diagnosis and treatment options.

The pathway ensures that, if an irregularity is found, a customer can go through diagnostic testing within one of Bupa's central London clinics, before being referred on to a consultant at the Bupa Cromwell Hospital or at a Bupa clinic, within a matter of hours if needed. Bupa will transfer all documentation internally, and a central team will book any required appointments. The new pathways have been designed to reduce customer admin and to create a more efficient route to diagnosis and treatment.

Speaking of the award, Professor Ahmed said: "It's fantastic to have been recognised with this award and a privilege to have the title. We've made some really big strides in the last year, which will help countless men facing prostate cancer. There's more to do, but we're moving at pace."

Hashim is an internationally renowned expert in prostate cancer diagnosis and biopsy, as well as minimally invasive therapies for prostate cancer like HIFU and cryotherapy - either whole-gland or focal therapy for primary prostate cancer or radiorecurrent disease. He has performed hundreds of transperineal targeted and mapping biopsies and hundreds of HIFU procedures, and has taught dozens of surgeons in these techniques in the UK and around the world. He has given dozens of invited lectures in this area and currently research and published many of the key papers driving the change in the diagnostic and treatment pathway of prostate cancer.

He was awarded the title by the Private Healthcare Awards, hosted by Global Health & Pharma, which celebrate the innovative people, departments and firms in the world of medicine.

The awards recognise excellence across the healthcare sector, including the practitioners and scientists at the cutting edge of these industries.
