Wisdom teeth are third molar teeth and they are the last to erupt in the oral cavity. They take the most posterior position in the mouth. They usually erupt between 18 to 25 years of age. Their eruption may be delayed in some cases. Third molars are basically vestigial and may cause problems while erupting. For these reasons they are often extracted. Wisdom teeth may also be completely or partially impacted in the jaw, when they have to be removed surgically. Common signs that a wisdom tooth is erupting are pain and swelling at the end of the jaw and inflammation.
