Vocal fold paralysis is a condition in which there is loss of movement of the vocal cords. It may be partial or complete. It is caused by a viral infection or damage to the nerves and muscles of the larynx. Symptoms are a breathy voice if only one cord is affected and total loss of voice if both vocal cords are paralyzed. Other symptoms are dysphagia and dyspnea. Speech therapy and surgery are the common treatment options.
