Vocal fold nodules are tiny callus-like bumps on the surface of the vocal cords. They are usually paired and are caused by voice overuse and misuse such as shouting, screaming and singing. It can also be due to excessive and persistent throat clearing. Symptoms are a rough voice, hoarseness, throat discomfort and a low pitched deteriorated voice. Voice therapy is the treatment of choice. In severe cases surgical intervention is necessary. The formation of nodules can be prevented by voice rest.
