Inflammation of the thyroid gland is known as thyroiditis. It is associated with abnormally high or low levels of thyroid hormones. Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is the most common type. Other types include drug-induced thyroiditis and radiation-induced thyroiditis, viral or bacterial infections as well as Reidel’s thyroiditis (thyroiditis associated with fibrosis). Hashimoto’s thyroiditis is treated with immediate hormone replacement, such as Levothyroxine.
