Fractures are breaks of bones or joints due to direct blows to the body part. There are many kinds of fractures, and if there is suspicion of a fracture, the affected body part is temporarily immobilized by an A&E or orthopaedic surgeon using splints and bandages. Treatment of a fracture may depend on the severity of the fracture which can be seen by carrying out an X-ray. The physician may use a cast to immobilize the part for weeks or months to allow the part to completely heal. Physiotherapy is recommended after the bone or joint has fully recovered.
