In blepharospasm eyes close involuntarily due to increased tone (‘spasm’) in the muscles of the eyelids (‘blepharon’). Mostly, the cause cannot be identified. However, it is thought that the defect lies in the nerve supply to the eyelid muscles. In some cases of trauma to the eye and infection such a condition can arise.
