In patients with high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity and high blood pressure there is a tendency for cholesterol, certain cells and protein fibres to deposit themselves on the inner lining of the arterial wall. This accumulation can cause a blockage and result in partial or complete obstruction of blood flow, thus depriving the tissue of nutrients and oxygen. This results in tissue death. Commonly the heart muscles, brain and peripheral arteries (those supplying the limbs) are affected resulting in heart attacks, stroke and loss of limb function.
