The most common surgical procedure for sinusitis is functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS). The procedure is carried out if other means of clearing the sinuses are unsucessful under general or local anaesthesia by an ENT surgeon. An endoscope is inserted into the nose and the sinus channels are examined. Any tissue or polyps causing sinus blockage are removed. A tiny balloon can also be inflated in the nose to open possible blocked drainage passages of the sinuses.
