Mr Peter Brownson is a nationally and internationally recognised Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at the Liverpool Upper Limb Unit based at The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University NHS Trust. 
As a managing partner of The Bone and Joint Centre, he is a specialist in arthroscopic, reconstructive and replacement shoulder and elbow surgery, truly offering a range of services and welcoming both private patients and patients referred by NHS Commissioners.

Training and experience

Following his medical degree at Liverpool University, Mr Brownson undertook orthopaedic research and training in Nottingham, gaining extensive trauma experience at the internationally renowned Queens Medical Centre.  He completed his training with a Fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at the highly regarded Nottingham Shoulder and Elbow Unit directed by Professor W Angus Wallace.  

Together with his colleagues at The Royal Liverpool Hospital, Mr Brownson has developed the Liverpool Upper Limb Unit, an international Centre of Excellence for shoulder and elbow surgery.  His particular expertise lies in arthroscopic shoulder surgery and he is regularly called upon to demonstrate the latest advanced techniques, both in the UK and overseas, as well as acting as Course Director for the Liverpool Advanced Shoulder Arthroscopy Course.

Mr Brownson is the Upper Limb Surgeon to Liverpool Football Club and additionally treats players from five other Premiership clubs.  A regular contributor to the academic literature, he is also often approached for his views on upper limb related topics by the media.

Mr Brownson is recognised as being at the forefront of shoulder and elbow surgery in the UK. This was recognised in 2012 when he was elected as a member of Council for the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS). More recently, Mr Brownson was elected as the Vice President of the Society and will become President in 2017.

Clinical interests

With  a national and international reputation as being at the forefront of arthroscopic (keyhole) surgical techniques, Mr Brownson offers assessment and treatment for the full range of conditions affecting the shoulder and elbow, including shoulder instability, loss of shoulder movement, sports and traumatic injury, and stiffness or pain in the shoulder or elbow. He is also highly skilled in open surgical procedures.

Research interests

Mr Brownson continues to be actively involved in upper limb research and has recently presented  a number of papers relating to the arthroscopic treatment of common shoulder surgery problems Including:

  • Limited capsular release and controlled manipulation under anaesthesia for the treatment of frozen shoulder syndrome
  • Bidway ASC, Neilsen M, Brownson P.
  • British Elbow and Shoulder Society Annual Congress June 2104

In 2013 Mr Brownson was commissioned by the British Elbow and Shoulder Society (BESS) to lead on the development of a set of national guidelines for the management of shoulder dislocations. The BESS Care Pathway on The Management of Traumatic Anterior Shoulder Dislocations was published in June 2015 in the journal Shoulder and Elbow.
