Michael Kurer: Consultant Orthopaedic and Shoulder Surgeon in London
Benefitting from over 20 years of experience, Mr Michael Kurer is a highly regarded consultant orthopaedic surgeon. He practices privately at BMI Hendon and BMI Enfield, and is also a full-time consultant in the NHS at North Middlesex University Hospital. Whilst Mr Kurer holds a special interest in disorders and surgery of the shoulder, he also offers the most economical carpal tunnel surgery available at an unrivalled price.
Training and experience
After graduating from medical school at University College London, in 1982, Mr Kurer embarked on his orthopaedic training at the Royal Free Hospital before completing his final training as a Senior Registrar at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital.
It was there that he undertook extra specialist training in disorders of the shoulder, culminating in him becoming a Shoulder Research Fellow. He was appointed consultant at North Middlesex Hospital in 1994.
He is a member of the British Elbow and Shoulder Society and the European Society for the Study of the Shoulder and Elbow and attends at least one international or national shoulder conference every year.
Conditions & treatments
Over the years, Mr Kurer has devoted an increasing amount of clinical time to patients with shoulder disorders. Often colleagues refer patients with complex shoulder disorders to him. He is also a specialist in diagnostic ultrasound of the shoulder and has his own machine which he brings to the clinic rooms in Enfield and Hendon, meaning that patients can be seen, have an ultrasound and, if necessary, an ultrasound-guided injection - all in the very same visit.
Mr Kurer diagnoses or performs:
- Acromio-clavicular joint dislocation and degeneration
- Arthritis and shoulder joint replacement
- Clavicular fractures
- Fractures of the shoulder and humerus
- Frozen shoulder
- Impingement and shoulder pain
- Shoulder dislocation
- Total elbow replacement
- Rotator cuff rupture
Computer-Guided Shoulder Replacement
Shoulder replacement has evolved over the last 30 years but recently there has been a sea change with the use of computers to dramatically improve accuracy of prosthetic choice and placement in the shoulder in the operating theatre.
The accuracy starts with a pre-operative CT scan, where the shoulder joint bones are copied as digital x-rays and then transferred to the planning computer.
Before the surgery, on the computer model, Mr Kurer will plan and decide what size and in exactly what position the new prosthetic components should be placed.
Using the Exactec Shoulder replacement system there is then a ground-breaking next step.
All those details are then saved on to the computer and can be accessed from within the operating theatre. At the time of surgery, various points on the bone around the shoulder are marked and linked with the computer. The computer is then linked to the instruments, for example the drill, guiding Mr Kurer as he places the components. This precisely replicates the positioning of the components, as planned before the surgery.
Not only are the components placed correctly, but all the securing screws are placed precisely, so as to avoid inadvertently perforating the bone and impaling soft tissues. Never before has this level of precision and safety been available.

Carpal tunnel surgery
He employs only the most advanced techniques for both treatments. They are performed exclusively under local anaesthetic, just like a treatment by a dentist. Patients do not have to starve. A special anaesthetic is used, which is almost painless and extremely effective.
No tourniquet is applied to the arm, resulting in no feeling of cramping during either surgery. Internal dissolvable stitches are used that cannot be seen and do not need to be removed by a doctor. Patients are free to use the hand the following day, without the need of a sling.
