Training and experience

Mr Anthony Hearnden graduated from Kings College Medical School in London in 1995 and undertook his orthopaedic training in South West London.  Following a prestigious fellowship in hand and shoulder surgery at the world-renowned Wrightington Upper Limb Unit in Wigan, in 2007 he was made a consultant at the Wrightington Hospital, gaining routine experience in the treatment of the full range of conditions that affect the hand, wrist, shoulder and elbow, including those of a complex and tertiary nature.

Mr Hearnden was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in 2010, where he specialises exclusively in upper limb surgery using the latest arthroscopic (keyhole) and minimally invasive techniques.  As part of Guildford Upper Limb, he works closely with other upper limb specialists and highly trained specialist physiotherapists and hand therapists to provide both NHS and private patients with a comprehensive multidisciplinary service for hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder problems.

Mr Hearnden works with physiotherapists and hand therapists to provide a range of non-surgical and surgical treatments for hand and wrist arthritis.  The areas most commonly affected are the base of the thumb, the finger joints, and the joint in the wrist that allows rotation of the forearm known as the distal radio-ulna joint (DRUJ).  Initial treatments that may be offered include splints, painkillers, anti-inflammatory medication, cortisone injections and exercises.

Where non-surgical options fail to bring about any improvement, Mr Hearnden is able to offer a number of surgical procedures to reduce pain and restore function to the hand and wrist.

Arthritis in the DRUJ of the wrist can result in the ulna head dislocating, causing a painful lump on the back of the hand.  Mr Hearnden offers a surgical procedure called the Darrachs procedure to remove the worn out bone, giving good pain relief and preventing further damage to the tendons and joint.  Younger patients and those with a high demand on the wrist, however, may be offered joint replacement surgery using the latest technique that leaves the ligaments and tendons intact. Joint replacement surgery is also a good option for those with finger arthritis.

What patients say about Anthony Hearnden

I am just writing a little note to you to thank you so much for the amazing surgery you did on my shoulder. I am absolutely delighted with it, and never in my wildest dreams thought that it would be such a wonderful success. Also, I did forget to mention the superb music in the theatre, due to the fact I was awake I really did appreciate it.
