A torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is the most common type of knee injury. An MRI scan or X-ray can be used to diagnose the tear. It is treated with an ACL reconstruction. In this procedure, the torn ligament is removed by and orthopaedic or knee surgeon and replaced by a graft taken from the patient’s own body. Most commonly grafts are taken from the patellar tendon and hamstring tendon. Cruciate knee ligament surgery may be considered as an alternative treatment. Complete recovery can take up to one year and a programme of physiotherapy is essential for a good outcome.
