Ahmar Shah: Consultant Gynaecologist in Somerset and Dorset
Mr Ahmar Shah is an experienced Consultant Gynaecologist with a specialist expertise in laparoscopic (keyhole) procedures. With a private practice covering Somerset and Dorset, he offers the highest standards of care for a wide range of gynaecological conditions including pelvic pain, endometriosis, menstrual disorders, fibroids and menopause.
Training and experience
Mr Ahmar Shah graduated in medicine from the University of Karachi in 1994 and became a Member and Fellow of the College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan in 2002. He undertook his specialist training in obstetrics and gynaecology in the UK (Eastern Deanery - Cambridge), gaining his Certificate of Completion of Training (CTT) in 2007. He has been a member of the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists of London since 2004.
Mr Shah has been a full time Consultant Gynaecologist at Yeovil District Hospital for 12 years. Appointed as Clinical Director of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2016, he is lead for the colposcopy service and Cervical Screening Provider Lead (CSPL), lead for the pelvic pain clinic, minimal access surgery and endometriosis, lead for perinatal mental health, substance misuse and vulnerable women ante-natal care and joint lead for the high risk obstetric clinic. He sits on the Safe-guarding Committee and is Chair of Maternity Risk Management and the Local Negotiating Committee. He is an organiser and trainer for the PROMPT Courses.
Mr Shah’s previous roles at Yeovil District Hospital include lead of the early pregnancy service and emergency gynaecology from 2009 until 2019. He has twice been the recipient of a Clinical Excellence Award from Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust in recognition for service development and providing excellent patient care.
Mr Shah is an accredited laparoscopic (keyhole) surgeon and has a degree in Medical Law & Ethics. Actively involved in teaching, he is Honorary Clinical Lecturer at the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Bristol and was a college tutor for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists from 2013 to 2016. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Gynaecology and Neonatal Biology.
