Training and experience

Mr Gerard Kelly graduated in Medicine from the University of Glasgow, going on to undertake his surgical and specialist otolaryngology training in Glasgow, Edinburgh and London.  He completed a fellowship year in neuro-otology under Professor R T Ramsden in Manchester and has a major surgical interest in the treatment of acoustic neuromas and other complex conditions of the ear and skull base.

Mr Kelly was appointed as a consultant ENT and skull base surgeon at The General Infirmary at Leeds in 2001, where he specialises in adult and children’s surgery and the non-surgical management of non-cancerous ENT conditions. He helped set up a clinic dedicated to the management of Neurofibromatosis Type II at the hospital, which has attracted national funding.

Mr Kelly has a particular interest and expertise in minimally invasive surgical techniques such as balloon sinuplasty and functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), and has worked to secure the funding of state-of-the-art equipment for his department. He is one of only a few ENT surgeons in the UK to carry out totally endoscopic ear surgery (TEES), and believes that the newly installed Olympus 4K video system at Leeds General Infirmary will provide the most advanced, safe and effective way to carry out middle ear and mastoid surgery.

In addition to his clinical duties, Mr Kelly is an honorary lecturer in otolaryngology at the University of Leeds, playing an active role in the teaching and training of medical students and junior ENT surgeons. He completed his Masters of Education degree in 2007, looking into perceptions of surgical training, and is keen to make surgical training and medical education a key part of his career pathway.

Throughout the years, Mr Kelly has been in receipt of numerous prizes and awards. He is a member of the council of the British Society of Otology (BSO, part of ENTUK) and runs the BSO balance course.

Research interests

Mr Kelly’s MD thesis investigated the chemical enhancement of facial nerve repair and involved the creation of a model for facial paralysis and repair using ‘neurotrophic growth factors’. His research on the differences in perceptions of training requirements between otolaryngology surgical trainers and trainees formed the basis of his Masters of Education degree and was presented to the North of England Otolaryngology Society.

Mr Kelly continues to play an active role in teaching and clinical research, contributing to medical education, training and assessment at the University of Leeds and the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. He has published extensively on ENT matters and has presented at both national and international meetings.

What patients say about Gerard Kelly

I had severe ear pain and had taken antibiotics and painkillers without success. Mr Kelly put me at my ease right away. He was very good at explaining my condition and what treatment options were available. He very quickly arranged a CAT scan and after having the condition for weeks, he treated me and I have not since had a single ear infection! He is a very kind and talented doctor and I highly recommend him!
