Shankar Sridharan: Profile

Dr Shankar Sridharan is a Great Ormond Street-based paediatric cardiologist offering expert assessment, diagnosis and treatment for the full range of heart problems affecting babies, children and teenagers, including heart murmurs, atrial septal defects (hole in the heart) and aortic stenosis.

Dr Sridharan graduated from Imperial College Medical School in 1998 and undertook specialist training in Paediatric Cardiology and Congenital Heart Disease in Children (CCST) and sub-specialty training in Fetal Cardiology at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London.

Based in the cardiac department at Great Ormond Street Hospital, the largest in terms of child heart surgery in the UK, Dr Sridharan works in close conjunction with specialist cardiologists and heart surgeons to provide a full programme of paediatric cardiology care. As Cardiac Network Lead, he is also responsible for the delivery of safe and sustainable cardiac services for children across London and referring hospitals.

Paediatric heart conditions

Occasionally the heart fails to develop correctly before birth resulting in problems with structure and function (congenital heart disease). Such problems may become apparent quite quickly, as a heart murmur, blueness (cyanosis), breathlessness and failure to thrive in a baby, for example, or later on in childhood or adolescence with symptoms such as susceptibility to chest infection, dizziness or chest pain.

Dr Sridharan offers rapid assessment and diagnosis of cardiac symptoms in children using the latest investigative techniques, including echocardiography, electrocardiography and cardiac MRI.  A meticulous and attentive doctor, he prides himself on providing the very highest levels of technical skill combined with a friendly and approachable manner.

In the event of a heart problem being detected, Dr Sridharan constructs a personalised care plan that includes direct access to leading paediatric interventional and cardiothoracic surgeons at Great Ormond Street Hospital if necessary, although many of the heart problems that affect babies and children do not need these types of treatment and can be effectively managed in his clinic.
