Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy (UGFS)

Ultrasound-Guided Foam Sclerotherapy, also known as VNUS Closure or ClosureFast, is a minimally invasive procedure designed to treat larger varicose veins (including those associated with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI)). It involves the injection of a special foam (called Fibrovein) into the affected veins under the guidance of ultrasound imaging. How it Works

• Ultrasound Guidance: A vascular consultant uses ultrasound to accurately locate and guide the insertion of a small tube into the targeted varicose veins under local anaesthetic.
• Preparation: The patient’s leg is raised to empty the veins and improve their visibility on the ultrasound.
• Foam Preparation and Injection: A sclerosing agent is mixed with air to create a foam. This foam is injected through the tubes into the varicose veins, causing inflammation inside the vein, and leading to its closure.
• Compression: After the injection, compression is applied to the area to facilitate vein closure and reduce the risk of complications. Over time, the body naturally absorbs the treated varicose vein and redirects blood flow to other healthier vessels.
