Dermal filler for lips and cheeks – a growing trend

Dermal Filler has soared in popularity in recent years, due to its user-friendly and modern reputation. More and more people are also opting for non-invasive and non-surgical treatments due to their lack or absence of downtime, quick procedure time, and highly effective long-lasting while non-permanent results.

Dermal fillers for the lips and cheeks are particularly sought after for helping achieve a more feminine appearance, with lip filler in the top of the list of most popular non-cosmetic treatments. Their sparked attention was largely started by beauty icons that are fans of such treatments, most notably, Kylie Jenner who started almost a ‘lip filler revolution’ and inspired many women to undergo the treatment.

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal Fillers can add volume to areas and can effectively contour the face. Used by some as an anti-ageing treatment, the popular treatment can also inject youth back into your face with its ability to restore volume and resolve lines and wrinkles. Regarding cheek and lip fillers in particular, dermal fillers can make lips fuller to a degree of your choice, enhance the lip border and address lines around the mouth. Cheek fillers have the ability to create more defined or prominent cheeks, and add volume to or soften the cheeks.

And what’s it made of? Leading dermal fillers that are used by the majority of UK practitioners, consist of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance that can be found within your own body, and that absorbs moisture to produce a plumping effect.  A few reputable brands of dermal filler are available, popular brands used in the UK including Restylane and Juvéderm. Lip fillers can be temporary or permanent, although permanent fillers are decreasing in popularity, with their complications being more complex to treat, and excision potentially being the only solution.

Your dermal filler treatment should be tailored to you, as no two clients have the same profile and needs. At The Private Clinic, for example, each client receives a bespoke treatment plan which addresses their unique requirements and your aesthetic nurse or doctor will help you choose from the range of dermal filler options available.

What are my cheek filler options?

If the aim is softening the cheeks and possibly smoothing out indents, without augmentation or projection of the cheeks, soft filler should be used. Juvéderm Volift is the filler The Private Clinic use in this case. This will be applied to the medial area of the cheek (the body of the cheek, beside the nose and between the eye and lips). And if the aim is to augment the cheeks by volumising or giving definition, the high cheek bone effect, The Private Clinic use Juvéderm Voluma, which is always applied to the lateral area (on the cheek bone), and can also be applied to the medial area. So Juvéderm Voluma can define the cheekbones, providing the look of strong facial contours and add volume to sunken or sagging cheeks.

The amount of filler used for standard cheek reshaping is usually 2ml. However, the minimum that can be used for the lateral area or medial area is 1ml (0.5ml applied to each cheek). If the lateral and mineral areas are both being treated a minimum of 2ml would be used (0.5ml applied to each area of each cheek).

What are my lip filler options?

As we mentioned, Dermal Filler can target the main body of the lips and add volume to thin lips, or define their vermillion border (the lip border that’s a pink to red shade). It can also treat lines around the lips. And whether you want to treat both lips, only the upper or lower lip, the lip border, or centre of the upper lip, you can address any area that you and your aesthetic specialist select to be most complementary for your profile.

Several lip filler options are available, for different requirements, such as adding volume, evening out the lips, or defining the vermillion border. You will find that many clinics offer a similar portfolio of options, but The Private Clinic offer Juvéderm Ultra Smile, Juvéderm Volbella and Juvéderm Volift for lip fillers. Juvéderm Ultra Smile can add body and fullness to both lips, improving its overall contour and shape. It can also treat lines around the mouth and depressions found at the corners of the mouth. Juvéderm Volift can offer lips long lasting and natural-looking volume. Lastly, Juvéderm Volbella adds subtle lip volume and is able to treat perioral lines (lines around the mouth).

Regarding the lip filler amount used, this varies with the desired outcome. Although, The Private Clinic typically recommends a maximum of 1ml to be injected at a time, and greater volume can be added over additional treatments. The lip filler golden ratio is often 1:1.818 top to bottom, to ensure a natural looking results is achieved. Although, this is not a blueprint for everyone, some clients suit more symmetrical lips, and some suit a more ‘top-heavy’ look. Your skin specialist will advise what is suitable in your case.

Why is a qualified doctor or nurse so important?

If you’re looking into Dermal Filler treatment, to restore fullness to the lips, cheeks or around your face, the most crucial consideration should be your safety and practitioner expertise. Some clinics offer beauty therapists for the procedure. Although, The Private Clinic advise that it is important to choose a qualified experienced aesthetician, fully informed of safety procedures, and skilled in providing a tailored approach based on a client’s individual facial structure, to ensure safe and successful results. Dermal Fillers do carry risks, so the practitioner performing the treatment must have the required capabilities to deal with the possible complications. Highly skilled and experienced specialist also should have the expertise to ensure the correct amount and technique is used to achieve only natural-looking, subtly enhanced results.

Though the current legislation allows therapists to undertake such procedures, it is expected that regulations will be introduced in the near future; requiring that injectable treatments are only carried out by those with full medical training.

At The Private Clinic, injectable treatments are all performed by a surgeon prescriber, cosmetic doctor or nurse, who has experienced extensive additional training to be qualified in prescribing and undertaking Dermal Filler Injections.
