Chemical peel process

A Chemical Peel is an intense exfoliating process, which uses chemical products to remove dead cells on the surface of the skin.

The treatment can be used to treat a number of imperfections and results will vary based on the type of peel. A chemical peel can be used to treat:

    Fine lines and wrinkles
    Acne scarring
    Sun damage
    Hyperpigmentation
Dull, lifeless skin. A peel is a fantastic treatment to refresh and rejuvenate skin texture and colour.

At The Private Clinic, they offer two main types of peels – superficial peels and medium peels:

Superficial Peels

Superficial peels are the mildest of the different skin peels. They remove the outer layer of cells and are used to treat fine lines, sun damage, uneven pigmentation, moderate scars and areas of dryness.

Medium Peels

Medium peels, also known as TCA skin peels because they contain trichloroacetic acid, penetrate further into the skin than superficial peels. They are used to treat wrinkles, acne scars, sun damage and uneven skin tone. This type of peel is used to treat problem areas on the hands, forearms and neck as well as the face.

What does a Chemical Treatment involve?

Occasionally, they’ll ask you to follow a very simple home care programme before you come in for your peel. This will consist of a number of products that you’ll need to apply for one or two weeks before your first treatment.

Before the chemical solution is applied, the skin is first thoroughly cleansed. Next the chemical solution is applied to the skin and left for a few minutes to soak in, before being removed.

In total the whole treatment will take less than half an hour.

They recommend a course of four to six superficial peels to treat mild acne scars and to reduce the signs of ageing. Deeper scars and lines and wrinkles will need one or two medium peels.

Does it hurt?

When the solution is first applied you may experience a mild stinging or burning sensation, however this feeling will only last about five to ten minutes.

Am I a suitable candidate for this?

Chemical peels are suitable for both genders and patients of all ages. Patients with darker skin may not be suitable candidates for the treatment as a peel can change the pigmentation of the skin. This will be discussed in your consultation.

What is the down time?

Post treatment, it is natural for skin to appear red or brown and swollen, depending on the peel used. However, these side effects are perfectly normal and will only last for a couple of days.
