Varicose Vein Consultation

It is reported that 3 in 10 people experience varicose veins in their lifetime with many more experiencing smaller thread or spider veins too. The amount of patients that get them checked or treated however, is significantly less. Many people do not think to get them checked as it often just the appearance of them that they are unhappy with, but varicose veins can affect everyone in different ways. It is advisable that anyone with varicose veins should monitor them to ensure that they are not going to cause any further health problems. At The Private Clinic, they offer comprehensive vein consultations and scans to give patients peace of mind as well as offering expert advice on how to treat or avoid developing further varicose veins.

What is a varicose vein?

A varicose vein is a bulging vein that can occur when the one-way valves that opens and closes to allow the blood to through the veins stops working properly causing the blood to leak backwards causing a backflow of blood which then results in the raised and bulging appearance.
Varicose veins are more than just a cosmetic complaint, they can cause a further range of unpleasant symptoms including a heavy and achy feeling the legs and burning and itching sensations. In more severe cases varicose veins can go on to cause blood vessel damage which can occasionally lead to DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis), a condition from which an estimated 25,000 people die from every year.

What does a varicose vein check consist of?

A Varicose Vein MOT will take place with one of The Private Clinic’s leading Consultant Vascular Surgeons who will perform a free duplex ultrasound scan. A duplex ultrasound scan differs from a traditional ultrasound scan and instead enables the surgeon to not only see the location of your veins but also see the way in which the blood is flowing through them.
After examining your veins, the surgeon will be able to explain the results of the scan, suggest advice on any problems and offer their personal opinion on whether treatment is necessary and if so, which treatment would be most suited to you.

How to treat varicose veins?

There are a variety of varicose vein treatments available and your surgeon will be able to recommend the best course of treatment to give you the best result.

The Private Clinic’s Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA) treatment is their most popular varicose vein removal treatment. EVLA is considered the Gold Standard of treatment for varicose veins by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE). The treatment involves inserting a small laser optic fibre into the problematic vein, laser light is then emitted which heats and collapses the unhealthy veins.

Another popular treatment is VenaSeal which is recommended for patients who suffer with a needle phobia as it only requires one injection per vein. The treatment involves inserting a small catheter into the vein and the VenaSeal tool then dispenses small amounts of medical grade Sapheon Glue that works to close the vein.

For patients whose veins are not suitable for EVLA or VenaSeal treatment, other options include sclerotherapy and phlebectomy and these treatments are often treated in combination with others mentioned above.

Sclerotherapy works by injecting of a chemical foam into the veins to destroy the walls and cause them to collapse. Phlebectomy, meanwhile, removes surface veins through careful incisions that are so tiny that no stitches are required.

At The Private Clinic they have a range of treatment options to suit all patients and their lifestyles. The best option is to go and talk to one of their experienced vascular surgeons who will be able to go through the procedures in detail and create a personalised treatment plan to suit you.
