Tinnitus means a ringing sound in the ear. Tinnitus is a condition in which several sounds can be heard in addition to ringing. These sounds include buzzing, humming and whistling. The causes of tinnitus include noise-induced hearing loss, ear wax, ear infections such as otitis media or a perforated eardrum. It may be continuous or follow an intermittent course. Tinnitus can be prevented by avoiding prolonged exposure to noise. Treating the underlying cause improves tinnitus. Sound therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, patient counselling, relaxing and antidepressants are helpful when the cause is not known.
