Pregnancy ultrasound scan
Pregnancy ultrasound scans (sonograms) use the sound waves to see a baby developing in the uterus. Two routine pregnancy scans that are normally performed as a maternity service are a dating scan and an anomaly scan. A dating scan is done when the woman is around 12 weeks pregnant. This is used to estimate the expected date of delivery. The anomaly scan is done around 20 weeks pregnancy by an obstetrician. This scan is used to diagnose any anomalies in the fetus.
Ultrasounds are also used to diagnose problems related to the heart, liver, abdomen, etc - read more about non-pregnancy ultrasound scans.
