Mouth ulcers are caused by damage to the inner membranes of the mouth or they may occur because of a reduced immune system or an iron deficiency (anaemia). Usually mouth ulcers heal on their own, but if a person has a weak immune system or the ulcer persists for more than three weeks, taking antibiotics might help.
