Anticoagulant therapy is is performed with drugs called anticoagulants. Anticoagulant therapy aims to oppose the blood clot formation. It also dissolves previously formed clots. Warfarin is the most common anti-coagulant. Indications for anticoagulant therapy are deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and atrial fibrillation. Warfarin is contraindicated in pregnancy, hemophilia and severe hypertension. Warfarin acts by slowing down the production of vitamin K which is essential for blood clot formation.
