HIV / AIDS
HIV is a virus that causes AIDS (or acquired immune deficiency syndrome). It is contracted through having unprotected sex with an infected partner. It is also passed from an infected mother to her infant during labor and breastfeeding, and in sharing infected needles and blood. HIV targets the immune system and weakens it causing respiratory and systemic complications. AIDS is the end stage of an HIV infection. There is no cure for AIDS but there are medications to manage symptoms and prolong a patient’s life.
