Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS) is a rare and serious illness that affects the peripheral nervous system. In GBS, the body’s own immune system attacks the body cells. The cause of GBS is unknown. However,it has been found that in most cases a previous history of viral or bacterial infection has been discovered. Symptoms include pain, tingling, muscle weakness, unsteady gait and numbness. Treatments include infusion of immunoglobulins and plasma exchange. 80% of sufferers completely recover.
