Having the flu once or twice a year is nothing to be worried about. The flu is caused by the influenza virus. There are different types of flu viruses, but the symptoms are generally the same. There is sudden high fever, dry cough, headaches, chills, joint pains, sore throat, diarrhoea, sneezing and loss of appetite. There are vaccines to prevent the flu and treatment is usually symptomatic. Antipyretics are given for fever, analgesics for pains and replacement fluids to prevent dehydration.
