Just below the voice box in the windpipe lies a ‘C’-shaped disc known as cricoid cartilage. If the subglottis is narrowed or blocked for any reason breathing may become difficult. ‘Cricoid split’ is a surgical procedure in which the cricoid cartilage is cut to make space in the windpipe.
