Asbestos related lung disease
Also known as asbestosis, the disease is found amongst construction workers, plumbers, electricians, shipyard workers, asbestos miners and navy veterans due to excessive exposure to asbestos. Those affected can develop pleural (outer double walled-layer of lungs) thickening, pleural effusion (excess fluid in pleura) and cancer of pleura or lung. Smokers are more prone to developing cancer. Patients may have chronic cough, breathlessness, blood in coughed-up sputum, chest pain or may have no symptoms.
