Deep TMS H-Coils - the latest advance in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Nightingale Hospital has been treating patients with severe depression (also known as clinical depression, major depression or treatment resistant depression) for over a year using Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS).

Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is delivered using an electromagnetic coil placed against the scalp surface. The coil generates brief but powerful magnetic field pulses, which pass unimpeded through the scalp and skull and induce an electric field in the brain. The Deep TMS H-Coils are a novel development in transcranial magnetic stimulation designed to achieve effective stimulation of deep neuronal regions.

The H-coils represent the state of the art in TMS coil technology. Their unique structure offers a good compromise between depth and focality, allowing deeper electric field penetration at safe and tolerable stimulation levels. The H1-coil was designed for effective and tolerable stimulation of prefrontal regions associated with depression.

Deep TMS using this coil was cleared by the FDA for the treatment of resistant major depressive disorder (MDD) in 2013. If you would like to read more about the H-Coil technology from Brainsway used please click here.
