Breast reduction benefits

The Private Clinic describes the revolutionary Micro-cannula Technique, or ‘MicroLipo’ procedure, which permits breast reduction without the need for major surgery.

Why undergo a breast reduction procedure?

There are many reasons why a woman may decide to reduce the weight and volume of her breasts. Excessively large breasts can cause pain, physical impairment and psychological problems.

Every ay activities (e.g. sports) that we take for granted can be significantly limited by large breasts and chronic changes in posture can lead to chronic pain in the back, neck, and shoulders. Finding a bra that fits comfortably and offers support can also become a great issue.

The treatment

Revolutionary to the UK, the Micro-cannula Technique or ‘MicroLipo’ procedure, as it is more commonly known, permits breast reduction without the need to undergoing major surgery.

MicroLipo is a minimally invasive procedure and as a result it allows for rapid postoperative recovery, meaning that the patient can return to normal activities soon after the procedure has taken place.

What does the MicroLipo treatment entail?

MicroLipo is a modification of traditional liposuction, in which a thin metal tube, known as a cannula, is inserted into the fat layer below the skin via a tiny incision.

MicroLipo Breast Reduction - a step-by-step guide:

  • The doctor will begin by measuring the volume of each breast
  • Next, lines will be drawn on the breasts with indelible ink, which will help the doctor during the infiltration process, and during the surgery
  • The doctor will inject a small volume of local anesthetic into the breasts which will cause the targeted area to become swollen and firm
  • Using a skin punch, the doctor will create a number of tiny 1 mm diameter holes in the skin
  • Next the fat is removed from the breasts using micro cannulas
  • After the liposuction procedure is completed, the patient will wear a breast compression garment
  • For the next few days the patient will be advised to shower and change pads twice daily. Most patients will discontinue the use of breast compression garments within 3 to 6 days

What are the advantages of MicroLipo for breast reduction?

The advantages of the procedure include:

  • No general anaesthetic
  • No surgical scars
  • Minimal trauma to breast tissue
  • Rapid recovery time. The typical patient can return to work and normal social activity within two to three days after surgery has taken place
  • Minimal risks of postoperative complications

Traditional breast reduction, involves cutting the breast with a scalpel to remove large amounts of breast tissues. Problems associated with surgical-excision breast reduction can include the risk of keloids, excessively large scars, uneven sized breasts, abnormal appearance of the skin near the nipple, impaired nipple sensation and possible nipple damage.

Am I a suitable candidate this procedure?

The best candidates will have breasts that contain a large proportion of fat. Women who are not ideal candidates for breast reduction by liposuction include those whose breasts contain more glandular tissue than fat tissue.

After menopause, much of the glandular tissue in the breasts is replaced by fatty tissue and therefore postmenopausal women with large breasts are usually very good candidates.

Young women, who are somewhat overweight, might also have breasts that contain a significant amount of fat, and will therefore also be good candidates for liposuction of the breasts.

Liposuction can usually be expected to provide no more than a 55% reduction in breast size. Women who require a greater reduction than this, might be happier with the results of a traditional surgical reduction.
