A urogynaecologist is a doctor who specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of urinary incontinence in women and female pelvic floor dysfunction.
More than 30% of women over the age of 60 suffer from urogynaecologic diseases such as urinary incontinence and prolapse. To address these problems urogynaecologists may use a variety of therapies such as comprehensive physiopathology, CT and MRI scanning and ultrasound. They also may work with continence advisors and physiotherapists to deliver a multi-disciplinary approach to female pelvic floor conditions.
The British Society of Urogynaecology was established in 2001. The Society's main function is to set and raise standards by providing guidelines, training, research and clinical meetings.
