Vitamin D has been recommended as a way of reducing the risk of heart disease.
The University of Warwick has conducted a study which found that middle aged and elderly people with high levels of Vitamin D could reduce their chances of developing heart disease by 43 per cent.
Acorrelation between high levels of the vitamin and low levels of diabetes occurrence was also revealed.
Denise Armstrong, lifestyle manager for Heart Research UK, commented: "We advise people to get out, expose [themselves] to sunlight, eat a healthy diet, and make sure they get enough vitamin D."
She added that people are "quite ignorant" of the health benefits of vitamin D and suggested eating healthily and getting sufficient sunlight exposure were preferable to taking supplements.
Around 2.6 million people in the UK are living with coronary heart disease, making it an important health issue to tackle.
It also claims 91,000 lives a year, adding to its gravity.
