Vale Healthcare gain approval for procedures under general anaesthetic

Vale Healthcare has just been given top-level approval to use General Anaesthetics (GA) in its Cardiff Bay Clinic, offering patients more treatment options for a wider range of conditions.

Cardiff Bay Clinic already provides a wide range of out-patient and day surgery services and, since it opened last September, has developed a reputation for prompt and effective care in attractive surroundings. Its six consulting rooms, day surgery operating theatres, imaging suite with MRI, physiotherapy department and health screening facilities are well used. Until now The Clinic has only been able to carry out procedures under local anesthetic and as a result many patients have been disappointed that they have had to go elsewhere if they have needed a procedure under General Anaesthetic.

Now that Vale Healthcare has met Healthcare Inspectorate Wales (HIW) rigorous requirements for administering General Anaesthetic and has had its application approved, experienced surgeons will be able to undertake more complex treatments and procedures across a range of specialties, including orthopaedic, urology, gynaecology and general operations.

Karen Healey, Vale Healthcare’s Head of Clinical Services, said the approval represented a major development both for patients and staff. “These are very exciting times for Vale Healthcare. Feedback from patients has been outstanding and, as well as getting our recent anaesthetic approval from Healthcare Inspectorate Wales, we also recently had an extremely positive inspection report from them.

“While we are in the process of building, our new ultra-modern 25-bed hospital at Hensol near Cardiff, it had become increasingly obvious to us, that patients needing more complex surgery, not requiring an overnight stay, were keen to have their operations with us at Vale Healthcare. Therefore the next logical step was to gain approval to carry those types of procedures out at our superbly equipped Cardiff Bay Clinic. We have top-class surgeons, anaesthetists, nursing and support staff and are pleased that their exemplary skills can be fully utilised.”
