Keighley Cougars community programme

Hundreds of schoolchildren are benefiting from an inspirational community programme delivered by the might of rugby league club Keighley Cougars. Club charity – the Community Cougars Foundation – uses the power of sport to inspire, educate and motivate youngsters from across Keighley and Craven. And its valuable work has been boosted with the delivery of a new minibus – a vital tool in the foundation’s ability to engage and work with 50 primary and eight secondary schools in the district.

Without a minibus the foundation would not be able to reach out to the schoolchildren – its previous vehicle is 10 years old and no longer reliable. The new minibus which has been secured with the help of a £10,000 donation from Sovereign Health Care, so it can continue to deliver its three key initiatives:

  • Work in the community – includes a street programme which supports and provides positive role models to children from difficult backgrounds
  • Work in schools – rugby coaching and health and lifestyle learning delivered direct to schools
  • Sporting Chance – offers work placements, educational opportunities and volunteering to youngsters.

Caroline Cundey of Sovereign Health Care says, "The real beauty of the foundation’s work is that it offers something to every child whether they are a rugby fan or not. It is about helping them take the right approach to their health and wellbeing from a young age – something they can take with them through life.”

The foundation has plans to extend its support to young people. It is developing a new programme designed to help youngsters take the next step in their lives, and is seeking sponsorship. For example, the Foundation has helped a teenager from Keighley to secure a place at Bradford College but he is struggling to meet his transport costs.
