Indian hospital agrees medical tourism initiative

A hospital in India has signed a deal which will extend its medical tourism activities.

 

Lokmanya Hospital, which currently treats patients from many countries including the US, Korea and Israel, is keen to attract visitors from more countries and has now signed a memorandum of understanding with a number of private clinics in the Sultanate of Oman.

 

Dr Narendra Vaidya, executive medical director and trustee of the Pune-based hospital, said that the hospital would specialise in knee replacement surgery and minimal invasive laser spinal surgery as well as cancer treatment and heart surgery.

 

Gulf countries such as Oman, much like the UK, experience public health system difficulties, as the number of patients needing treatment exceeds availability.

 

"The patients are therefore going to places like Bangkok or Malaysia where they pay five times what they would pay in India," Dr Vaidya told the Business Standard.

 

The surgeon revealed that the hospital is currently holding talks with other nations in a bid to reach other similar arrangements for treatment abroad.
