Eye tests 'vital part of healthcare'

Eye tests are a vital part of healthcare, according to one member of the General Optical Council (GOC).

Kate Fielding, director of communications and information for the GOC, highlighted that not only will an eye examination prove important for sight, but it could also "find any underlying health problems, like high blood pressure or diabetes".

Ms Fielding's comments follow a piece of research from Mintel which revealed that a large number of Britons are failing to attend regular eye examinations.

As many as one in five Brits rarely or never make the trip to the opticians.

"Regular eye examinations should be part of your health routine. An eye examination is not just to check whether or not you need glasses to see long distances or read easily," Ms Fielding added.

The research also found that only one in three Brits claimed not to need or use some kind of vision correction.
