Amalgam removal 'needs to be considered'

Time and consideration should be taken before making a decision to remove amalgams.

Marina Carew, dentist and founder of the Marina Carew Dental Practice and Holistic Clinic, said that drilling the substance out can lead to a lot of mercury vapour being released, so the dental professional needs to be very careful.

"It is something that people need to be very sure that they want to do, it has to be totally their decision," she stated.

She explained that a number of patients have seen symptoms improve after removal, but people need to understand that there is always a chance of a nerve dying and the tooth needing to be replaced.

This comes after Dr Maurice Johannes from the Harley Street Clinic said that a lot of older adults are now turning to cosmetic dentistry work such as veneers and bridges to improve their smile, but he too stressed that patients should weigh up all the advantages of each procedure before committing.
