What is a hernia?

Weak spots can develop in the layer of muscle in the abdominal wall, resulting in the contents of the abdomen pushing through. This produces a lump called a hernia. A hernia can be dangerous because the intestines or other structures within the abdomen can get trapped and have their blood supply cut off (strangulated hernia).

Hernia repair, paraumbilical and umbilical

There is a natural weakness in the abdominal wall behind the umbilicus, caused by the way babies develop in the womb. In children under the age of about four, umbilical hernias tend to close on their own. For older children and adults, the hernia will not go away without an operation.

Surgery is usually performed under a general anaesthetic and takes about half an hour. Your surgeon will make a cut around your umbilicus and remove the hernial sac. Inguinal hernia surgery (open)

An inguinal hernia happens at the inguinal canal. This is a narrow passage in which blood vessels supplying the testicle pass through the abdominal wall.

There are a variety of anaesthetic techniques possible for this type of surgery which usually takes about three-quarters of an hour. Your surgeon will make a cut in your groin and remove the hernial sac. They will strengthen the muscle layer with stitches and will usually insert a synthetic mesh to cover the weak spot. Inguinal hernia surgery (TEP and TAAP, laparoscopic hernia surgery)

Hernia surgery can also be perform laparoscopically, either as TEP laparoscopic or TAAP laparoscopic hernia surgery. 

Your surgeon will make several small cuts on your abdomen. They will place surgical instruments, along with a telescope, inside your abdomen and perform the operation. They will then perform the operation using surgical instruments inserted through two small holes.

Recovering after hernia surgery

You should be able to go home the same day or the day after. You should increase how much you walk around over the first few days after your operation.
