Fast access to diagnostic tests for gynaecological problems
Any unusual bleeding or discharge, itching or burning, or pain in the pelvic area or abdomen needs investigation. BMI Healthcare's experienced consultants use the very latest technology and techniques to diagnose, and in some cases treat, gynaecological conditions.
Colposcopy
Any abnormalities of the cervix can be detected with a colposcope, a magnifying instrument that can examine the cells of the cervix. A colposcopy is usually performed if a smear test indicates the presence of abnormal cells or to investigate unexplained vaginal bleeding or pelvic pain. The gynaecologist will perform a biopsy for further analysis and, if necessary, treat the affected area immediately with large loop excision, laser treatment or cryotherapy.
Laparoscopy
Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive technique allowing the gynaecologist to make a full examination of the organs of the pelvis and abdomen. It is used to detect endometriosis, pelvic infection, pelvic inflammatory disease, ovarian cysts and cancer, damaged fallopian tubes and ectopic pregnancy. Some gynaecological procedures can be performed laparoscopically, including removal of fibroids, and sterilisation.
Hysteroscopy
The inside of the uterus can be examined using a small telescope (hysteroscope). It is also possible to take biopsies and remove abnormal growths using this instrument. Hysteroscopy is used to investigate, and in some cases treat, abnormal bleeding and heavy periods, fibroids, polyps and endometrial cancer.
