The Private Clinic provides some useful facts about the FUE method of hair transplant surgery.
Follicular
Unit Extraction, or FUE, involves removing healthy hair follicles directly
from the scalp, usually at the back of the head where the hair is plentiful,
and grafting them onto the bald or thinning areas.
At The
Private Clinic they tend to transplant hair into the same slot that contained
previous hair in order to achieve better uptake (permancy), angles and
direction.
The
treatment is carried out under local anaesthetic, so there is no scarring and
the results are permanent.
What does it
involve?
A
FUE procedure lasts approximately eight hours. However in some cases, where
lots of hair is being transplanted, procedures can last up to two days.
On
the morning of the procedure the donor area is usually shaved, allowing easier
access to the roots and individual follicles. The donor area is next numbed
with an injection of local anaesthetic, to ensure that the patient does not
feel any pain during the procedure.
Once
the donor area is numb, a special punch, which is less than 1mm in diameter, is
used to remove the hair follicles one by one directly from the scalp. We can
safely extract up to 7,000 hairs in one day, whereas with previous generations
of FUE it was only possible to extract 2,500 hairs.
After
the hair has been collected, the treatment area is then numbed with local
anaesthetic, and the hair that has been extracted will be replanted using
miniscule instruments and meticulous attention to detail on the part of the
doctor.
Once
all of the donor hairs have been transplanted the treatment is finally complete.
