Manu Mathew

Mr Manu Mathew is the Clinical Lead and Consultant Ophthalmologist at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. He also leads the cornea and external eye disease and glaucoma service.

A highly-skilled eye doctor, Mr Mathew is a graduate of JIPMER, Pondicherry, India (University of Madras) and worked as a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Sankara Nethralaya, Chennai, India. He subsequently trained at a number of teaching hospitals, including the Tennent Institute and Queen’s Medical Centre (University of Nottingham), prior to taking up his current post as a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

Clinical experience

Lens surgeon Mr Manu Mathew has a wide range of experience in the management of complex cases in his sub-specialties, including glaucoma surgery and corneal transplants. He performs cataract surgery with special lenses to help achieve complete spectacle independence after cataract surgery (for both distance and near vision) using premium multifocal and toric lens to correct astigmatism.

Clinical interests

Mr Mathew’s specialism is cataract removal and lens replacement (intraocular lens implants). He will also advise on the diagnosis of retinal problems such as those that can occur as a result of diabetic eye disease, presbyopia (long sightedness) and in reading glasses reduction.
