Philip Drew

Training and experience

Professor Philip Drew qualified from St Mary’s Hospital, Imperial College London, in 1990. Following training in London, Yorkshire and Wales he was appointed Senior Lecturer in Surgical Oncology at the Hull York Medical School in 2000, becoming Professor of Tissue Engineering in 2005. He has been Consultant Surgeon to the Royal Cornwall Hospitals Trust since 2008 and holds an Honorary Chair in Surgery from the Hull York Medical School. 

In addition to his basic medical degrees, Professor Drew has completed two higher medical degrees with Honours, Master of Surgery and Doctor of Medicine.

In his NHS position as a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon at the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust, Professor Drew is involved in the treatment of over 500 new patients with breast cancer every year. He plays an active role in the education of surgeons and is an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) of England, Imperial College and several other universities in the UK and overseas.  He is also co-director of the Advanced Management of Breast Disease Course of the RCS England, UK Senior Course Director for the Association of Breast Surgery and is on the executive council of the Association of Breast Surgery.

Professor Drew's private practice is based at Duchy Hospital in Truro. He is also a member of The London Breast Clinic team at 108 Harley Street, an integrated service staffed by a dedicated multi-disciplinary team specialising in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of all benign and malignant breast disease.

Professor Drew’s has a specialist interest and expertise in breast cancer and benign breast disease, male breast disease including gynaecomastia, reconstructive breast surgery and cosmetic breast surgery.

He provides the full range of operations for benign and malignant breast disease including mastectomy, therapeutic mammoplasty, sentinel node biopsy and axillary clearance, breast reconstruction with flap surgery, fat transfer and nipple reconstruction, as well as aesthetic breast procedures such as augmentation, reduction, breast uplift and gynaecomastia surgery.

Research interests

Professor Drew’s main research interests are the molecular biology of breast cancer, reconstructive breast surgery and gynaecomastia. He is a regular contributor to the scientific literature, having published several books and over 100 articles, and is regularly invited to lecture at meetings both nationally and internationally.
